KAI 3
Fighting air pollution with living technology.

About KAI 3: The Future of Clean Air in Urban India
What is KAI 3?
KAI 3 is an advanced urban photo-bioreactor—often called a “Liquid Tree”—designed to combat the severe air pollution crisis in India’s densely populated metro cities. It is a biotechnological solution that uses living microalgae cultures (Chlorella vulgaris and Spirulina platensis) to actively clean the air where planting traditional forests is impossible.
Designed for the concrete jungles of cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Patna, and Bangalore, a single KAI 3 unit occupies just 2 square meters of space but delivers the carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) binding power of 200 square meters of lawn or two mature trees.
How It Works: Technology vs. Pollution
Powered by the natural process of photosynthesis, KAI 3 is 10 to 50 times more efficient at carbon fixation than terrestrial plants.
- Capture: Polluted urban air is pumped into the 600-liter water tank.
- Purification: The microalgae absorb CO2, Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
- Filtration: The water column traps harmful particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), reducing smog and dust.
- Release: The system releases pure oxygen back into the atmosphere and produces biomass.
Why India Needs KAI 3 Now
India faces a unique challenge: skyrocketing urbanization and critically high AQI levels (often exceeding 300). Traditional greening methods require time and vast land, which our smart cities lack. KAI 3 bridges this gap.
- Combats Heavy Metals: Unlike standard air purifiers, KAI 3 effectively removes heavy metals found in Indian traffic exhaust, including Lead, Cadmium, and Aluminum.
- All-Weather Resilience: Engineered to function in temperatures ranging from winter lows to summer highs, ensuring year-round performance.
- Circular Economy: The algae biomass harvested from the unit (every 45–90 days) is repurposed as high-grade organic fertilizer for city parks, creating a zero-waste cycle.
Smart Infrastructure for Smart Cities
KAI 3 is more than an air purifier; it is a piece of multifunctional urban furniture designed for the modern Indian citizen:
- Solar Powered: Operates off-grid with sustainable solar energy.
- Social Hub: Features an integrated seating bench and USB charging ports for mobile devices.
- Safety & Aesthetics: Provides ambient bioluminescent night lighting for street safety.
Aligned with National Goals
The KAI 3 initiative directly supports the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) and the Smart Cities Mission, offering a scalable, scientifically proven path to reducing urban health risks and economic losses caused by pollution.
